A nine-year-old girl from Lambeth has died after contracting swine flu.

The girl, who died over the weekend in St Thomas’s hospital, also had “serious underlying health conditions”

She is the fifth person in the UK to have died from the disease.

NHS Lambeth’s chair Caroline Hewitt said she confirmed with "great sadness" the death of the girl.

She said: “On behalf of the people of the borough as a whole we send our deepest sympathies to the family and friends.”

She said to protect the confidentiality and privacy of the family, no further details of the case would be released.

“As has been said throughout this outbreak, almost all of the people who have had swine flu nationwide have experienced a mild illness and have recovered quickly at home. However, a number of people have been more severely ill,” she added.

She said anyone with flu-like symptoms should go to the online flu symptom checker at nhs.uk or call the swine flu information line on 0800 1 513 513.

Anyone concerned about swine flu should stay at home or call their GP for advice, she added. They should not go to a hospital A&E unless it is a medical emergency.

London is the second-worst affected area in the UK by swine flu. On Friday, the capital had more than 1,900 confirmed cases.
