More than 2,000 young athletes took part in the county’s own mini Olympics, competing in 10 different sports.

Youngsters in Reigate and Banstead came home loaded with medals, winning six gold, five silver and one bronze medal, while Mole Valley team members won three gold, one silver and two bronze.

Epsom and Ewell, the smallest district in the county, won two gold, one silver and four bronze in the P&G Surrey Youth Games held at venues at Guildford and Woking on Saturday and Sunday, June 20 and 21.

Young people aged seven to 15 from 10 districts competed for medals and trophies in a variety of sports including football, hockey squash, netball, basketball, boccia, swimming and judo.

Swimming was a demonstration sport this year, but competitors in all other sports scored points depending on their final positions.

A complex scoring system meant Guildford and Spelthorne ended up sharing the winners’ trophy.

The future Olympians met Beijing Paralympic equestrian gold medallist Sophie Christiansen, Dominic Lloyd Walter, who plays squash for England and Neala Brennan, from the English netball team.

One of the main aims of the Games is to encourage young people to develop their sporting skills and to promote physical activity as well as fair play in sport.

More than 3,500 young people attended coaching sessions over the past two months in preparation for the games and, for many of the players selected, the event was their first experience of countywide competition.
