A pupil at Blenheim High School, Epsom, has been diagnosed with swine flu.

The school, which is remaining open, is refusing to confirm whether any other pupils are away with the disease and is referring queries to Surrey County Council.

The county council is referring queries to the Health Protection Agency which says it cannot give information at local level.

Last week, Blenheim headteacher Teresa Leech sent a letter to parents confirming the school has one mild case of swine flu in the school.

“We have been assured by the HPA that there is no cause for alarm and that the school should remain open,” she wrote.

“Since the first concern, earlier in the year, over this illness, staff have had tissues for students in classrooms and clear notices are on cloakroom doors about thorough handwashing.”

There are now 48 confirmed cases of swine flu in the county, but on Tuesday a spokesman for Surrey NHS said that it was unable to say where in the county.

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust has confirmed a swine flu patient is being treated at one of its hospitals, but refuses to confirm whether the patient is at Epsom or St Helier hospital, but a spokesman said the Blenheim pupil was not one of its patients.

Surrey County Council, which on Tuesday had a swine flu “update” on its website claiming the number of confirmed cases in Surrey was just 19, is referring queries to the Health Protection Agency.
