Surrey County Council has launched an initiative to help adults with learning disabilities develop their confidence and independence.

The adult family placement service gives people with learning disabilities the chance to spend time with families either on a short or long-term basis.

The council has set a target of recruiting at least six adult placement carers in the first year and wants to double the number in the second year.

Adult placement is similar to fostering for children and offers long-term care as well as short-term breaks and day support for the adult placement carer.

Councillor Michael Gosling said: “You can play a big role in helping adults with learning disabilities increase their independence and build their confidence by offering your time and support.

“People with learning disabilities have told us they want more choices about where they live and who they live with and to have services that are flexible. They asked and we have listened.”
