A school teacher and science co-ordinator is helping pupils do their bit for the environment.

Divina Phillips, 29, is working with students from Stanley Park Junior School, where she teaches to develop green projects such as recycling bins in each room and bins for clothes and shoes.

The pupils are also being prepared for the Eco schools Awards, the national programme to help embed sustainability into the heart of school life.

She said: “I help manage an Eco Committee comprised entirely of young people from across the school which help make sure the school keeps up with recycling plastic, card and paper, as well as working on other eco-issues.

“In each classroom there are two elected eco-representatives which we call the eco-warriors, who attend a weekly eco meeting.

“They will feedback to the rest of their class on any important new issues – for example if the wrong items are being put in the recycling bins.”

Stanley Park is one of the schools which use the waste and resources action programme from Recycle Now – environmentally-friendly teaching material.

It includes assembly resources and lesson plans to show pupils how they can make a difference by recycling.
