A Leatherhead couple suspected of having made millions of pounds through managing a network of brothels have been arrested this morning during a series of raids across the country.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police's Clubs and Vice Unit, supported by Surrey and Gloucestershire Police, carried out nine search warrants as part of Operation Icefall, an intelligence-led investigation launched in October 2008.

Seven people were arrested and seven suspected victims rescued.

The investigation centred on a 55-year-old woman believed to have controlled the empire, which it is claimed netted over £1 million pounds a year. Together with her 43-year-old partner, she is believed to have used mainly trafficked women to staff at least four brothels in London and the Home Counties.

The pair were arrested at an address in Leatherhead where £5,000 in cash, three Mercedes and a Vauxhall transporter were seized. Two Lamborghinis, also believed to belong to the couple, were also found in workshops.

Police also visited two other properties belonging to the couple in Gloucestershire.

Further arrests were also made as police targeted those thought to have contributed to running the brothels including a 46-year-old Epsom man.

Four brothels were shut down containing women mainly from East Europe and East Asia. They are thought to have been working at the brothels for little or no payment.
