This was the scene after a fire ripped through car garages in Mitcham Lane yesterday evening.
The fire, at the junction with Blegborough Road, destroyed 12 cars and “several garden sheds” when it started just before 4.30pm.
No one was injured in the blaze but Mitcham Lane was closed in both directions, just as the rush hour started, for more than an hour.
One eyewitness said: “There was smoke everywhere, fire engines and police cars. Traffic was stacking-up as Mitcham Lane was closed.”
A London Fire Brigade spokesman said the service was called at 4.32pm and the fie was under control at 5.46pm.
He said: A car storage facility was 50 per cent damaged and 12 cars and several sheds were 100 per cent damaged.
“We sent four engines, one appliance from Tooting, two from Norbury and one from Mitcham.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
