More than half the anti social motorists caught driving over a mini roundabout in the outskirts of Leatherhead live locally, say police.

The motorists who drove over the mini roundabout rather than driving round it were stopped during a crackdown on motorists who flout the rules of the road.

Mole Valley’s safer neighbourhood officers stopped 35 vehicles in one day during a purge on motoring offenders.

Fetcham’s neighbourhood specialist officer PC John Hench carried out road safety checks along Guildford Road (Hawks Hill) and Cock Lane on Thursday, June 11 clocking speeding motorists.

PC Hench said: “I know speeding is a real concern for the local community and last week’s clampdown was a direct result of issues raised at the local panel meetings.

Following on from the speedchecks PC Hench and police community support officers from the roads policing unit moved on to Cobham Road and monitored the mini roundabouts.

During the course of the afternoon 11 motorists were stopped for either driving over the mini roundabout or cutting the mini roundabout out. Of those stopped seven were given words of advice and five received fixed penalty notices.

PC Hench added: “The issues of speeding and driving in a dangerous manner are both high priorities for local residents in Fetcham.

However, it is interesting that of those 11 motorists spoken to for dodging the mini-roundabout more than half live in the local area.

“I will continue to monitor the situation and deal robustly with those who continue to commit offences and I can assure the local community there will be further speed enforcement days.”

During the speed checks a total of 26 motorists were recorded driving at excessive speeds.

The majority (20) will receive warning letters from Surrey Police, five drivers were issued with FPNs and one man was reported to court for speeding as he already had nine points on his licence.

The FPNs for speeding result in a £60 fine and three points on the license. FPNs issued for contravening
