Party lovers are gearing up for scorching summer of festivals, fairs and fetes in Merton.

The next few months will see three of the borough’s biggest annual celebrations take place - Mitcham Carnival, the Wimbledon Village Fair and Colliers Wood arts festival Abbeyfest.

The Mitcham Carnival, set to take place on June 13, will begin with a procession of floats and marching bands on the theme ‘the pride of Mitcham’ from Figges Marsh to Commonside West.

Other attractions at the party will include a horse display team, dance groups, stilt-walkers, the Mitcham mini games and a little league football final. There will also be a fun fair, refreshments and a variety of stalls.

And for the first time in the event’s history, there will also be a live music stage hosting local bands.

The following weekend will see the Wimbledon Village Fair with hundreds of activities including human table football and sumo wrestling as well as classic stalls like the coconut shy and tombola.

Entertainment will include musical performances and horse and dog shows.

A food village is set to feature a beer tent, wine and champagne bar and tea garden.

The event, which takes place on Wimbledon Common Southside on June 20, will raise money for the Wimbledon Guild.

And from July 6 to August 31 lovers of music, theatre and comedy can enjoy two months of entertainment at Abbeyfest 2009.

A huge mix of musical styles includes jazz, blues, and chamber concerts.

Other attractions include theatre, stand up comedy and an open air short film festival.

Events will take place at Merton Abbey Mills other venues across Colliers Wood. Abbeyfest will close on August 31 with Kidfest - a day of fun including drama and music performances, craft workshops, story telling and much more.
