Homeowners offering tennis stars a place to crash away from the court have been told to make sure their properties meet safety standards.

Wimbledon residents are set to make up to £9,000 a week renting their house to players and coaches during the Championships later this month.

But a British Gas boss has warned anyone looking to cash in that they need to take the same safety steps as full time landlords - even if they are only taking tenants for a few days.

Chris Bielby, head of safety at British Gas, said: “People who only rent their homes out for two or three weeks a year may not realise that this makes them a landlord.

"This means they are required by law to have a Landlords’ Gas Safety record to cover any gas appliances in the dwelling.”

“Although an incident is unlikely, it is not worth flouting the law and risking a conviction for the sake of a comparatively small outlay.”

Landlords who do not have the documents face fines and imprisonment if someone is injured by an unsafe appliances.

Landlords should call 0845 300 0303 or visit britishgas.co.uk.
