The Mayor of London is considering funding improvements to the derelict Colliers Wood tower as momentum grows to take action over the most hated building in the capital.
Merton Council officers are in early negotiations to secure London Development Agency (LDA) assistance that would help the building’s private owners kick-start development on the building that topped a recent poll.
The move comes after an attack from Mitcham and Morden MP Siobhain McDonagh who accused the council of allowing the building to be moth-balled as masonry fell to the pavements and amid reports of porn movies being filmed on the site.
Although planning permission to redevelop the site has been granted, developers told the MP last month that there was no prospect of converting the office block into flats until the economy picks up.
In 2008, the tower was among the top 10 of buildings the British public would most like to see demolished.
But with the site on top of the Tube line, the tower would have to be taken down brick by brick.
