Kingston favourites Tubelord are currently playing across the country and their headline tour calls in at New Slang next Thursday. The Noise caught up with the band’s lead singer, Jo Prendergast.

What are you expecting from the New Slang show? You can never really tell what’s going to happen – hopefully, there will be some people there! A gig is a gig, and we approach them all with the same mentaility. Whether it is a support slot or a headline slot, we give it the same bounce.

You have played at New Slang plenty of times before and toured with fellow Kingston favourites Tellison – are Tubelord part of a burgeoning Kingston set? I wouldn’t say so because we aren’t all in each others’ pockets and we don’t play there every week. I can see how people might get that impression but I’m not sure how honest it is to the whole DIY ethic of the scene down there.

What is happening with your debut album? We recorded the new record over Christmas with Tristan Ivemy, who has worked with the Holloways. We’ve heard the first mix and I’m really pleased with it. We planned to release it in June but we are waiting to get things sorted out with a label first. It will probably be out in October or November time. It’s quite frustrating that people don’t know but, at the same time, it gives us a chance to write some new songs and get the second album ready to go.

Last year you released a couple of singles on the Big Scary Monsters label – what’s Tubelord’s next move label-wise? We are not sure at the moment. We’ve got interest from a couple of labels and our manager is organising it all. He’s a bit like our dad really, not wanting to reveal too much to us.

How would you describe Tubelord’s sound? Sean [Bamberger, Tubelord’s bassist] says we are a Phil Collins for this century but I’m not sure I’d agree with that – we can only dream of reaching his level!
