Angry Lambeth housing tenants, facing the highest rent increase in the country, will march on the town hall this Saturday, despite an expected 3 per cent rent cut.

On Tuesday, Council Leader Councillor Steve Reed said he expected to hear within days the Government would fund a rent cut from 17 per cent to 14 per cent.

Following an “extremely positive” meeting with Housing Minister Margaret Beckett he said he was confident of the £2.12 reduction on the average increase of £12 a week.

But Tenants Council chairman, Rosario Mundae - which is in line with the 3.1 per cent reduction bailout offered to all councils because of falling inflation - aid the reduction would not affect the protest.

She said: “The reduction will not make a difference to those pensioners facing what is still the biggest rise in the country.”

Hundreds are expected to attend the joint tenant and Unison march against the rise, job cuts, poor service at council housing management company Lambeth Living and the sell-off of council homes.

Rent increase could be cut further if talks with the Government regarding a one-off £11m payment, and other plans to release capital funds, end favourably.

Saturday’s demonstration will take place at Lambeth Town Hall at 11am.

It will then march to Coldharbour Lane, where a number of council properties are due to be auctioned-off.
