A group coordinating volunteer work across Merton borough is planning on a celebrating the hard work and achievements of Merton’s community work force.
To coincide with the 25th anniversary of National Volunteers Week, Volunteer Centre Merton (VCM) is helping to organise a series of awards and events in the borough.
Merton’s new mayor Nick Draper will present gongs at Mitcham’s Vestry Hall on June 4 to those who have volunteered 100 hours service to the community over the course of a year.
Andy Norrell, director of VCM, said: “In these difficult economic times with many local voluntary organisations struggling to make ends meet, volunteers make a real difference.
“For those whose jobs have been affected by the recession, volunteering is a good way of keeping up to speed, using and honing your skills and developing new ones, not to mention helping a good cause. And volunteering is viewed by employers very positively.”
