Crystal Palace captain Shaun Derry has tipped Clint Hill and Nathaniel Clyne to walk away with the club's player of the year awards.

The Eagles host their end of season presentation night at Selhurst Park this Saturday with Hill expected to be given the honour ahead of other nominees Shefki Kuqi, Julian Speroni, Jose Fonte and Paddy McCarthy.

Speroni took the trophy home last year but Derry expects him to lose out to Hill this time around.

"There have been two outstanding players this year for us in a season that's been disappointing," said the 31-year-old midfielder.

"Julian continued his fine form of last season and I think he has kept us in this division single-handedly but my tip has got to go to Clint Hill really.

"He trains every day like he plays every Saturday afternoon and is a great example to the young players and I think he has just shaved Julian.

"He has had a great season and wears his heart on his sleeve."

Clyne is up with Lee Hills, Victor Moses and Sean Scannell for the young player of the year accolade and was rewarded for his outstanding season with a new improved deal last week, something Derry believes was vital.

"I think him signing a new deal is important in more ways than one," he said.

"It's important to get some of the young lads signed up on long term contracts because if we were to lose Clyne in similar circumstances to John Bostock we would be kicking ourselves for letting it happen again.

"For him to have a good professional contract against his name is great for him too.

"He has not just eased himself on to the scene but has burst on to it.

"At 17 in the Championship he has made such an impression and that's testament to his attitude and ability."

Clyne's decision to put pen to paper came just two days after manager Neil Warnock signed a new one year deal, a decision Derry also applauded.

"You ask the gaffer and he would be the first one to say it has been a disappointing season," he said.

"But for him to commit his future to the club at an age when you thought he probably had one year left in him and sign a new contract is great for the club.

"That's one thing we have been short of a little bit as there has been a lot of changes here the last four years in players and staff and we don't want to see the manager change again."

Derry's season was ended early because of a shoulder operation and the former Leeds United man admitted that although the recovery was going well, it was frustrating too.

"It's going well but I am not enjoying the close season the way I wanted to," he said.

"While the rest of the lads are off on their holidays I am going in everyday for rehab but that's life, it's still the best job in the world."
