Croydon Airport (EGCR) was an airport in South London which straddled the boundary between what is now the London borough of Croydon and Sutton.

Croydon was the first airport in the world to introduce air traffic control, in 1921. It was the main airport for London before it was replaced by Northolt Aerodrome (RAF base near Heathrow Airport), London Heathrow Airport and London Gatwick Airport.

It originated as two adjacent World War I airfields - Beddington Aerodrome, one of a number of small airfields around London, which had been created for protection against the Zeppelin raids in about May 1915, and Waddon Aerodrome of 1918, a test-flight aerodrome adjoining National Aircraft Factory No 1.

Croydon Airport's Aerodrome Hotel is part of Croydon Vision 2020 regeneration plan. If this is really so, then I would like the organisers project managers to at least think of somehow try to recreate on a small scale the original setting of the airport, to give it a realism of how industrious Croydon was at that time. This would make a great museum attraction piece.

To give Croydon pride knowing that it was here that the beginning of technology in the aviation industry Croydon played a significant part. Making use of these historical landmarks is surely the best way to build on eradicating the criticism that Croydon brings whenever the place is mentioned.

I do hope that someone of an archaeological experience is advising Croydon Council before they get trigger happy with demolition, and question decisions, especially those that are born of pure fantasy and stupidity.

From what I can see at the moment quite a few buildings have been pulled down with great significance of the landmarks of Croydon only to be replaced with hideous high rise flats that just look out of place and spoil the look of Croydon in an ugly way.

With this recession and people losing their homes, I question who are these developers and Council marketing? So can someone step up to the plate and ensure that the heritage of Croydon remains standing, and not in a cavalier manner dismiss all and ram through the town without looking.

Since the inception of Minerva PLC to agree conditional sale of 50% interest in Park Place retail development to Lend Lease. Croydon shop units and surrounding buildings have been subjected to compulsory purchase order (CPO).

This in my opinion means converting areas into a ghost town, a shanty town in the making. In theory there is an ends to a means and most of the time you see the result almost instantly.

But in this instance and in other areas of Croydon where the hatchet of CPO has been driven, the result has been closures of shop units and buildings and the incursion of empty drab areas in-habited by crime and violence.

Unfortunately the recession has bitten hard into the fabric of every Croydon Council financial project and with it the backlog of projects left on the back burner.

Fine if at the end of the day you jump into the comfort your car or the Train to take you away from the uncertainties of a town slowly crippled by started projects put on hold. Who has to live here in the meantime the Croydon residents?

With the up and coming Olympics 2012, it will be interesting to see what Croydon will be presenting as a package!
