By Community Correspondent, Philippa Hennessy Stephen Hammond, MP for Wimbledon, yesterday voted in Parliament to help defeat the Government’s attempt to restrict the right of former Gurkhas to settle in the UK.
Stephen Hammond said: “For the first time since Gordon Brown became Prime Minister, his Government was defeated in a Commons vote. It was a historic day. Gordon Brown misjudged the mood of the public and I am delighted that opposition parties were able to come together to stand up for the Gurkhas.”
“I strongly believe that former Gurkhas, and other foreign-born ex-service personnel, have already contributed to our society, and have therefore earned the right to come here. They need the right to settle in the UK.”
