Steve Cordery would rather be playing Tonbridge than Carshalton Athletic this weekend.

The Staines Town manager is fearful of his opponents’ away record as they come to Wheatsheaf Park for the promotion final after a 3-2 win at Longmead.

And even though the Robins shipped 63 goals over the course of the campaign – only one less than they scored and more than anyone else in the top half – Cordery is concerned about their form on the road.

Carshalton are Non-League’s away-day specialists and in all competitions have won 15 times on their travels.

Both sides are one match away from Blue Square South football and a bumper crowd is expected at Saturday’s winner-takes-all finale.

And Cordery said: “I would prefer to be playing against Tonbridge than Carshalton truth be told – people are saying Tuesday was perfect results-wise for us but it’s not the case.

“They are formidable away from home. Their home form isn’t so good but we know they will really, really fancy their chances down here on Saturday.

“They score a lot of goals and I know they will be a big test. But we’re looking forward to the match and I can see it being an end-to-end encounter.”
