Richmond Park will be coloured pink as 450 pink clad ladies head off on a 16 mile fund raising sponsored walk to raise money for charities committed to fighting breast cancer.

The Pink Power Walk, which will be held on May 17, started six years ago, and Cathy Comerford, one of the founders said: “There were six of us in a keep-fit group. We were unable to enter another sponsored walk so we decided to set up a walk of our own instead.”

Since the walk approximately half a million pounds has been raised for Breakthrough and the Caron Keating Foundation.

This year is particularly important to Breakthrough as it has just opened a new research centre in Guy’s Hospital.

Its scientists are researching basal-Like breast cancer, which makes up of around 15-25 per cent of breast cancers diagnosed in the UK.

The Caron Keating Foundation offers support to individuals and families affected by the disease and were set up in memory of the former Blue Peter presenter who died from breast cancer in 2004.

Dawn Garland, founder of the walk said: “The Pink Power Walk is a phenomenal event that pushes breast cancer awareness in the community and the work that the Caron Keating Foundation does.”
