Watching Your Every Move

I recently spotted my brother in a photo of a crowded street in London in The Times newspaper. He had no recollection of it being taken and was rather surprised to see his face in a national newspaper! However nowadays being caught unawares on camera is becoming an increasingly common occurrence in this Big Brother country. Everywhere we go, security cameras document our every move, tracking our journey throughout the day and recording everything we do from many different angles.

Statistics claim that the average Briton is caught on camera around 300 times every day. Britain is home to 20% of the world’s CCTV cameras, to record 1% of the world’s population. No other country in the world seems to have the same level of obsession with CCTV as Britain. The city of Croydon has more CCTV cameras than New York.

But despite the British government funding the world’s largest CCTV network (contributing £420m) are these cameras achieving their aim of combating crime, or merely invading people’s privacy? Either way, do any of us have a choice? The answer is probably no. Whether you support this real life Big Brother trend or not, you are still likely to be caught on camera up to 109,500 times a year.
