Quick-thinking police officers saved the life of an 84-year-old man who was stabbed in Wandsworth last week.

The elderly man was left fighting for his life after sustaining multiple stab wounds during the incident off Garratt Lane last Thursday, April 23.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Aslett Street at 2.25pm following reports that an elderly man had been attacked in his home.

Officers smashed through the front door of the terraced house and disarmed a knife-weilding man before giving the victim, who had several deep wounds, emergency medical assistance.

The wounded man – who has not been named – was taken to hospital.

He was initially described as being in a critical condition but has since improved, police said.

Detective Inspector Alan Hodgson said: “This was an extremely serious assault.

"The officers who attended the scene clearly acted with bravery, detained a male who was armed with a knife and provided emergency life support to the victim until the London Ambulance Service arrived.

“I would appeal for any witnesses who have not yet come forward to contact Wandsworth police community safety unit on 020 8247 5435.”

Two of the house’s front windows had been broken in the incident as well as damage inside the property.

A weapon was recovered by officers at the scene and the incident is being investigated by the Wandsworth community safety unit.

A shopkeeper said: “It was impossible to tell what had happened because there were many police cars and ambulances plus an air ambulance.”

Officers were still guarding the house the following day while forensics experts examined the crime scene.

Robert Walsh, 54, of Alsett Street, appeared at West London Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, April 25, charged with attempted murder.

He will appear at the Old Bailey early next month.
