A campaign to move Morden into zone three in a bid to save the regular commuter up to £300 a year appears to have reached the end of the line.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has thrown out the proposal put forward by Wimbledon parliamentary hopeful, Andrew Judge, despite the support of several hundred residents.

Mr Judge claims many other stations across the capital are further from central London yet benefit lower zone three fares, including nearby Wimbledon Chase station.

He said: “I can’t believe this would cost a huge amount to implement, but the benefits would be immediate and lasting.

“Boris said he was running on the basis of being an outer London Mayor. Well this is a suburb that could do with some assistance.”

He added: “It seems unfair that people living in Morden should have to pay more even though they live the same distance from central London as residents in Wimbledon Chase, for example.

“This cash saving would be a real boost for south Londoners in the current economic climate.”

Mr Judge received a letter from the Mayor declining his request claiming he was incorrectly calculating the distance from Morden to central London.

But the Mitcham councillor has vowed to fight on and will present a petition of more than 300 signatures campaigning for the move to Mayor Johnson.

A spokesman for the Mayor of London said: “The Mayor believes Morden tube station is correctly allocated to Zone 4 as it is actually further from the centre of London than the Zone 3 stations that campaigners chose to use as examples. "With this being the case he is not convinced that rezoning Morden could be justified.”
