Alistair Darling announced Britain’ new budget, and was greeted with scoffs and prompted headlines such as ‘Alistair’s Living in Wonderland’ and drew comparisons to Robin Hood (rob from the rich, give to the poor). Whilst it is true that his economic forecasts are, well, a little optimistic, I do think that perhaps he is onto something! The rich that should be ‘penalised’ are the footballer’s who can earn upwards of £120, 000 a week. Contrastingly, the hardest workers; the doctors, fire fighters and teachers, would generally have to work for years and years to even dream of that kind of affluent wealth. What I question is how that happened? At what point did it seem right that that should become the status quo?

Our society has become so obsessed with a celebrity culture that their money and wealth is glamorised and lusted after, meaning that people are even more desperate to buy the latest car, the hottest gadget, the newest I-phone. Well, where has this kind of spending and obsession with celebrity landed us? In the middle of the worst economic recession since the Second World War.

Our economy has become a product of wealth and greed, and as a result we are suffering the consequence. Perhaps this is now a time to re-address the balance, and the people who save lives and mould future generations will finally be rewarded accordingly.
