Two film-makers are fighting to save a century-old River Thames crossing.

Octavia Hartland, 28, and colleague Becky Lee, 32, are trying to put together a short news piece on Hammerton’s Ferry and hope to highlight the threat of closure it faces.

Miss Hartland said: “When I heard this might close I thought about what I could do and this is a good way of getting Francis a bit of publicity.

“The owner, Francis Spencer, will soon need to replace his existing boat and it will cost such a huge amount of money for him to raise that it’s just not feasible.

“We really want to hear from any cameramen out there who would be willing to spend a day or so filming for the project and it would be great to get some sponsorship or funding.”

Hammerton’s Ferry crosses the River Thames between Marble Hill House in Twickenham and Ham House in Ham and was launched in 1909 by Walter Hammerton.

Since then the ferry has had three other owners including Mr Spencer.

Miss Hartland added: “Hammerton’s Ferry is the last privately owned ferry on the Thames and is the only means of crossing the river between Teddington and Richmond.

“Many businesses, residents, visitors to the area, young families and dog walkers would be greatly disadvantaged if we were to lose this iconic bit of local history and heritage.”
