Sutton’s unemployed who have experienced a mental health problem can benefit from a new initiative to improve their chance of getting a job.

The 12-month pilot scheme launched by South-west London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, and Remploy, a specialist in employment services, will provide personalised placement and support, which will include work assessments, training, advice on personal development, job applications and interview techniques, and ongoing support during their employment.

An employment specialist will help those using services from Cheam, Carshalton and Wallington community mental health teams and Cheam resource centre, which are run by St George’s Trust.

Mark Clenaghan, the trust’s director of mental health services in Sutton and Merton, said: “Having a job is important to your mental health and we’re very pleased to be launching this innovative project.

“It reiterates our commitment to promoting recovery and self-directed support among our clients and, in doing so, will help many people in Sutton enjoy a brighter future.”

Jo Munns, head of specialist services at Remploy, said: “By working closely with local mental health services we hope to make employment an integral part of recovery from mental health issues.

“Last year we helped find jobs in mainstream employment for 7,000 people with a range of physical, sensory and mental disabilities.

“We look forward to bringing our expertise to the trust and the area.”
