A three-year, £5m partnership between Transport for London and Sutton Council to promote greener ways of travelling has won a pair of prestigious awards.

Councillor Colin Hall, deputy leader of Sutton Council, won a top industry award for his contribution to local transport and his leading role in the Smarter Travel Sutton initiative at the London Transport Awards.

The project also scooped the award for Travel Information and Marketing.

The judges said Coun Hall was “largely responsible for the council being rated as the only four-star (improving strongly) council and the top-rated environmental performance council in London.”

Coun Hall said: “These awards are a great honour but they are really for all the residents, schools and businesses who have been such enthusiastic supporters of Smarter Travel Sutton. "The results we are seeing, with cycling up 50 per cent on last year for example, show that local people share our vision for a greener borough.

“In Sutton we can and will continue to chip away at people’s reliance on the car. "In the coming months we will start talking to residents about major transport projects in places such as Wallington, that will make walking, cycling and public transport the best way to travel in the borough.”
