A plumbers’ merchant is bringing its first green building to Sutton.

The Plumbase purpose-built branch, in Wealdstone Road trading estate, has green features such as roof and walls covered in plants, and was designed to have minimum impact on the environment and to try to make it carbon neutral.

The plant-covered roof does not need maintenance and the walls have stainless steel mesh covered in ivy.

Both the roof and walls are there to encourage the return of local wildlife, as are bird posts and stone piles scattered around the site.

Local plumbing and heating engineers are now able to call in or order goods for delivery at the 5,200 sq ft premises, designed in accordance with thermal insulation requirements.

Dean Ives, manager of the new branch, said: “Having lived and worked locally for many years, I know the area very well and have built up good relationships with local tradesmen.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming them to this superb new depot, which is impressive in its size and in the range of stock it is able to hold.

“We are very excited to be opening a branch in Sutton, especially one that is achieving several ‘firsts’.

“Sutton and the surrounding area is a busy area that is both commercial and residential in nature and which is ideal for a plumbers’ merchant.

In the first three weeks after opening, Plumbase in Sutton will be running a series of roadshows with experts from key manufacturers, and demonstrations and displays of the latest products.

It will also have special offers, promotions, giveaways and breakfast mornings with free bacon butties and hot drinks.
