A male pedestrian is in a life-threatening condition after a car careered off Clapham High Street this morning and ploughed into two pedestrians.

According to police, the Mini Cooper, that crashed into a man and woman outside Belgo restaurant, was earlier involved in a collision with a white van.

The female pedestrian was taken to hospital with a suspected head injury and the driver, who received treatment for a neck injury, was arrested.

Clapham High Street and Edgely Road were cordoned off after the incident at 11am this morning and forensic investigators are reportedly still at the scene.

Alastair Gaston, who witnessed the aftermath of the accident, said: “The mini is totally shunted at the front and the windscreen looks smashed.”

The male van driver stopped at the accident and has been arrested in connection with dangerous driving. He is currently in custody at a south London police station.

Officers said the roads were likely to be shut to cars and pedestrians until 4pm today.
