Kingston helped in the bid for a new world record on Sunday by hosting a people’s premiere of new eco-film The Age of Stupid.

Kingston’s Odeon, in the Rotunda, was one of the 65 venues chosen to host a simultaneous premiere of the new film starring Oscar-nominated actor Pete Postlethwaite.

The film, which cost just £450,000 to make, is set in a world ravaged by climate change in 2055, with Postlethwaite looking back to 2008 and why nothing was done to save the Earth.

Transition Town Kingston (TTK) helped organise the event at the Odeon and the 337 seat venue was sold out.

There was a live link to the West End premiere in Leicester Square and Kingston environmentalist and co-founder Campaign against Climate Change, Hilary Gander, addressed the audience.

Toni Izard, from TTK, said she was proud Kingston was a part of the world record.

She said: “The cinema was buzzing with excitement. The film is a wake up call to all those who want to ensure a habitable world and good standard of life for their children and grandchildren in the foreseeable future.”

More than 16,000 people from around the country attended a premiere and it is hoped that the screenings will be confirmed as a new Guinness World Record.

The film is released nationwide on Friday, March 20.
