A man accused of running into two children and a police officer at the New Addington Christmas lights ceremony appeared in Croydon Crown Court today.

The incident, on November 22, left PC Keith Gray with a broken back after he was thrown over the bonnet of a Renault which he tried to stop as it drove into the parade.

Louis Browning, King Henry's Drive, New Addington, was charged with two counts of aggravated vehicle taking, two counts of driving whilst disqualified and driving without third party insurance.

The 20-year-old stood before the court dressed in a grey jumper and grey trousers.

He pleaded not guilty to the first charge of aggravated vehicle taking and the first charge of driving whilst disqualified and guilty to the other two counts of aggravated vehicle taking and driving whilst disqualified.

He also pleaded not guilty to driving without third party insurance.

Mr Browning will return to stand trial on March 23.
