Elderly residents will get free meals at a number of social clubs as Lambeth Council invest £240,000 in improving the quality of life for the borough’s older people.

The neighbourhood clubs will offer 5,200 luncheon club places and the opportunity to make friends, take part in activities and get advice and support on everything from borrowing a library book to claiming benefits.

The network of clubs overseen by Age Concern Lambeth and run by selected local groups including the Streatham Darby and Joan Club and the Norwood Pensioners Group, will receive the funding over the next three years.

The groups welcomed the funding, and said the scheme would help the increasing numbers of older people who are socially isolated and struggling alone to make ends meet as the credit crunch takes hold.
