Demolition of the old Woodmansterne Pavilion to make way for an £800,000 sports facility on Woodmansterne Recreation Ground has started.

The run-down changing rooms of Woodmansterne Sports Club, in Woodmansterne Street, are being demolished and replaced with a new six-team changing room, plus officials' changing facilities and toilets.

Construction of the new building is expected to start at the beginning of February and be complete by mid summer.

The Football Association is funding 49 per cent of the capital cost of the work with Reigate and Banstead Borough Council paying for the rest.

During the works the sports club will use temporary changing rooms located in the recreation ground on the south side of Woodmansterne Street.

The Football Foundation is dedicated to revitalising the grass roots of the game, constructing modern football facilities and developing football as a way of encouraging community spirit.

Funded by the Premier League, The Football Association and the Government, the Football Foundation is the nation's largest sports charity with a £40m budget going straight into the heart of football.

Councillor r Adam De Save, executive member for leisure and wellbeing, said: "Woodmansterne Sports Club is a popular and well used sports facility so the local community will benefit hugely from the new facilities.

"This is a true partnership project between the Borough Council, who own the land, and Woodmansterne Sports Club, who lease the facilities and carry out most of the day to day maintenance of the site.

"The start of work on site sees the culmination of four years hard work come to fruition. “
