A Mitcham pensioner who was about to celebrate her 53rd wedding anniversary died after tripping over her handbag, Westminster Coroner’s Court heard on Thursday.

Joy Goodson, 73, of Warminster Way, returned home from a shopping trip with her husband, Alfred, on Thursday, November 11 last year, and put her bag down in the hallway.

But as Alfred made his way upstairs he heard a loud bang and saw his wife had fallen over it.

The court heard how retired housewife Mrs Goodson said she felt fine and the couple went out to play a game of bingo at Cheam Social Club, but when they arrived home at 5pm she complained of a headache.

Mr Goodson then noticed his wife’s eyes were rolling and she was taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, where she was found to have bleeding on the brain.

This was made worse due to various medication she was taking and she could not be operated on, the court was told.

Coroner Dr Paul Knapman recorded a verdict of accidental death.
