South London businesses must forget the negative headlines and concentrate on solutions to guide them through the economic crisis, says Peter Pledger, chief executive of South London Business - a group representing companies south of the Thames.

Mr Pledger made the comments in the wake of the British Chamber of Commerce’s Survey released last week, which said there was a “frightening deterioration” in the UK’s economic situation.

Mr Pledger said: “I’m disapointed. We don’t want to hide from the truth but the fact is company results are very mixed. We are going through a bad time and we don’t need everyone saying how bad it is.”

Figures this week will confirm that Britain is officially in recession, but, Mr Pledger said, it was now up to business leaders to press the London Development Agency (LDA) for more action and greater access to funding and initiatives.

He said: “The LDA needs to offer more business advice and help to south London and it needs to make it simple for businesses to do this.”
