A woman trying to do a three-point-turn ended up on top of a neighbour’s car.

Robert Den-Hartog, 35, an American primary school teacher who lives in Ashtead, looked out the window after hearing a crash noise to find his neighbour’s car on top of his £10,000 Chrysler Neon, which was parked in the driveway.

“My wife and I had tea that night and had just gone to bed at about 10.30pm, tired after work, and I have to get up early.

“I was fast asleep when Claire woke up when she heard the noise, and ran to the bedroom window.

“She said, ‘you’re not going to believe this,’ so I ran over to the bedroom window and looked out. I just said: ‘Holy Moses!’ and ran down stairs to help the woman out of the car.”

While doing a turn, the driver hit the accelerator instead of the brakes of her £18,000 B Class Mercedes which ended up four feet high, sitting on top of Mr Den-Hartog’s car, just after midnight on Monday.

“She couldn’t get out of the car because she was about four feet high up in her car,” Mr Den-Hartog said. “She was upset and shaken up but was fine, I thought it might be unstable but it was not, it’s actually very stable, they were well and truly wedged together.”

Mr Den-Hartog said her husband went to his house and they sat up and had a cup off tea together: “It was all very British. She was very apologetic.

“We all just had a laugh about it, sitting in the lounge as we waited for the recovery van to come.”

No one was injured and police attended the scene, but no action was taken.
