Wandsworth could inherit rubbish from neighbouring Lambeth when a tip is coverted in to a recycling centre, it has been claimed.

Questions have also been raised over how green the new Vale Street recycling centre - opening in February - will be, when it will force people wanting to dump their non-recyclable waste to increase their carbon footprint by driving some five miles to tips in Battersea or Wandsworth.

Lambeth Council officers made the decision to convert the Vale Street civic amenity site to just a recycling facility - where reusable goods such as compost would be sold - because builders were illegally dumping commercial waste there.

The council argues paying for this waste to go to landfill is costing taxpayers up to £300,000 a year and the borough must drive up its recycling rates or face even heavier penalties in the future.

However the council argues it provides a pick-up service from people’s home addresses that diminishes the need to go to the tip.
