The Kingston Chinese Association returns on January 31, to once again ring in the Chinese New Year with a series of professional performances and market stalls.

2009 marks the Chinese Year of the Ox and, in celebration, Memorial Square will be pedestrianised and given over to the traditional Chinese performance artists.

The impressive array of free entertainment includes ribbon and fan dances, martial arts demonstrations as well as a Chinese sword dance.

In between shows, members of the public will have the chance to browse various stalls, perhaps stopping to have their name printed in Chinese calligraphy.

Liz Ellis, marketing executive of Kingston town centre management group KingstonFirst, is one of the organisers of the all-day celebration. She said: “Last year we had some great weather for the celebrations so we’re hoping for the same again.”

The celebrations run from 11am to 5pm on January 31, in Kingston’s Memorial Square.
