Robert Askey is set to become the youngest ever Mayor of Croydon following the sudden and unexpected death of Councillor Jonathan Driver.
At just 26, Coun Askey will officially take over all mayoral engagements until the end of the municipal year, after his appointment was approved at cabinet last night.
His appointment comes after previous incumbent, and previously the youngest Mayor on record, Coun Driver passed away on New Year’s Eve after suffering from flu.
Jon Rouse, Croydon Council’s chief executive said: “It was with immense sadness that we learnt the news of Coun Driver’s sudden death but we welcome Coun Askey into his new role. I am sure he will do an excellent job, both in memory of his former colleague and within his own right.”
Coun Susan Winborn will be appointed as Deputy Mayor. The mayoral charities supported by Coun Driver, Croydon Sea Cadets and TheCause 2000 will remain the same.
