Julian Speroni believes last season’s FA Cup heartache at Watford will not be a motivational factor when the two sides clash again in the competition this weekend.

Two Danny Shittu headers saw an inexperienced Eagles side crash out in the third round at Vicarage Road 12 months ago and while many Palace fans will be eager to gain revenge, Speroni, who did not play in the game, believes last season’s result will not have an impact on the players thinking.

“It’s a totally different season and it’s going to be a totally different game,” he said.

“I know the recent history wasn’t very good with the play-off semi-final three seasons ago then last season in the FA Cup it was not too good but it’s a totally different season and we are really looking forward to the game as it’s very important.

“We take it very seriously and we want to go to far in this competition.

“They are a good team and they are in the same league as us but I think we have a very good chance to go there and win it.”

The 29-year-old conceded four goals for the second time this season on Saturday as the Eagles lost 4-1 to Ipswich Town at Selhurst Park, but is adamant the team have put the result behind them and moved on.

“Nobody likes to lose in the way we lost,” he said.

“I don’t think the result shows what happened on the pitch really but that’s the way it has gone and we have to accept it.

“We are moving on and nobody wants to think about the last game, we want to think about the next game.”

The Argentine is closing in on a century of appearances for Palace in his fifth season at the club and, barring injury or suspension, should reach the milestone on January 31 against Blackpool.

“It’s great,” he said.

“Since I have been here I have tried to play week in week out and be in the team and I’m really pleased to be doing that and reach 100 games.”
