A bed-ridden man was rescued from a fire in his flat in Elderberry Grove last night after his carers were alerted by his smoke alarm.

Two fire crews from West Norwood rescued the 62-year-old man, who had been overcome by the smoke, and gave him oxygen before an ambulance arrived.

He was taken to hospital but his injuries are not thought to be serious.

A spokesman from the fire department said: “We received a call about a fire in a ground floor flat in Elderberry Grove, West Norwood.

“We administered first aid and oxygen to the man before the ambulance arrived.”

He said that there was no major damage to the flat and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

“This was a case where the smoke alarm did its job and we were able to get a man to safety.

“We would encourage everyone to have smoke alarms fitted,” he said.
