The expansion of Heathrow will be disastrous for residents in the Streatham constituency, according to opposition parliamentary candidates.

It is predicted that planes will pass overhead some parts of the constituency every 90 seconds during peak times if the extension is built.

Conservative candidate Rahoul Bhansali said under the £9bn proposals approved by the Government last week, local residents were set to suffer a vast increase in noise pollution from the hundreds of thousands of extra flights.

He called “environmental concessions” announced by Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon – including improved rail links to Heathrow, strict monitoring of airport noise and pollution levels - nothing more than “cynical spin”.

Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesperson for Streatham, Chris Nicholson, called the expansion "bad for Streatham residents and disastrous for efforts to tackle global climate change”.
