A mum of three has won a car in a raffle.

Elaine Knight, 40, from Croydon won a Nissan Micra after buying 15 raffle tickets in support of St Christopher's Hospice.

She had just decided to replace her large expensive family car for a more economical one when she heard that she had won.

she said: "I didn't buy the tickets to win a prize, just to support St Christopher's. The penny still hasn't dropped. I can't believe I have been so lucky."

St Christopher's Hospice founded in 1967, is situated near Croydon and cares for terminally ill patients and their families.

The winning ticket was drawn on December 19 out of the boot of the car by Ancaster Group managing director Stephen Wood.

It costs St Christopher's over £13 million every year to maintain its services.

It looks after over 2,000 dying individuals every year and some 800 patients in their own homes on any one day.

Louisa Hitchen, a community fundraiser for St Christopher's, said: "I would like to thank everyone who bought tickets. We have raised an amazing £108,000 and all the profit will fund patient care.

“As a registered charity we rely on the generosity of the public to continue our work."
