A group of women in Cobham are putting the finishing touches to a patchwork quilt they have made for a cancer charity.

The 11 women call themselves The Fat Quarters and lost a member to cancer last month, while two are battling the illness at the moment.

They made the quilt to donate to the Fountain Centre in Guildford where one member is being treated, and hope it will be raffled or auctioned to raise funds for the centre.

Toni McLeod, treasurer of the club, said: "There is a lot of love between us and we are very fond of each other. We have lots of laughs and often lunch together. We've grown close since forming the club."

The women, who range from their 40s to mid-70s, moved to Cobham Village Hall when Cobham's Adult Education Centre closed while they were on a course there.

In the past three years they have worked on many quilts but their current one, started in April, is extra special because it is going to a good cause.

"We all contributed to the patches out of the material we had at home so it's very special," said Mrs McLeod.

"It's nearly finished now. It is sad that some of the women among us are fighting illness but at the same time it's nice we can do this to support them and others with cancer."
