The Mitcham and Morden community has rallied around its MP, Siobhain McDonagh, who was dramatically fired by Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Friday after calling for his resignation.

Ms McDonagh remains as a Member of Parliament, but has been stripped of her position as a Government Whip for being the first senior Labour politician to call for a leadership election.

The Government is now in turmoil with 13 MPs following the example of Ms McDonagh and calling for a new leader - including David Cairns, a minister and former aide of the Mitcham and Morden MP and former Merton councillor.

It requires the backing of 70 Government MPs to force a leadership election.

“I’d been greatly concerned about the direction of the party for some time,” said Ms McDonagh.

“We’re in Government to do things, not just to have a job, and I don’t think we’re at the level we should.”

A private, handwritten, letter from Ms McDonagh to the General Secretary of the Labour Party was leaked, outing her as a Government rebel.

And while her position was never intended to be made public, Ms McDonagh said she has no regrets and was acting on behalf of her constituents.

She claimed plans such as the overhaul of the Wilson hospital “hang in the balance” as a result of Gordon Brown’s weak leadership.

“Mitcham and Morden is a constituency that loses out on issues like health care. If Labour doesn’t win the election, then something like this may never happen,” she said.
