It is not every day that Kingston can boast having a world premiere on its doorstep.

But staff and service users at the EnhanceAble project turned out in force last night for the glitzy launch of their film 9 1/2 weeks.

EnhanceAble is a charity working with disabled adults across Kingston and beyond and the 30 minute film was entirely conceived, written and shot by service users.

Guests at the premiere, held at the charity’s Geneva Road day centre in Surbiton were treated to red carpet luxury and a Hollywood-themed party.

The film was part of the service users’ summer project and tells the story of the charity by visiting its supported housing project and charity shop in Surbiton and the Maple Centre unit at Kingston Hospital which offers an information and support resource to parents of disabled children.

Through the film we also meet many of the staff and volunteers that make the project tick and follow service users enjoying music clubs, trips, cookery sessions and art workshops.

Terry Hillier is one of the stars of the film and takes viewers for an inside look around his work as a volunteer at Kingston Hospital library.

He has been a service user at EnhanceAble for 35 years.

He said: “I’m very proud to have worked on the film. It’s been stressful at times but we all worked as a team and had great fun.”

Volunteer manager Adele Cowell said: “We hope this film will help show the community what we’re all about and raise awareness of our work.”
