The mum of stabbed teen Eugene Attram has told how the whole family has suffered since his death following a gang fight.

Ashley Rookwood, 18, from Tooting was found guilty of murder and violent disorder and jailed for 12 years on Friday.

Eugene, 16, from Thornton Heath, was stabbed in the chest back and head during a gang fight involving up to 60 youths next to Ravensbury Park, Mitcham in November 2006.

Eugene's mother Maureen Enyonam read an impact statement about how Ernest Bevin College student's death has affected their family.

Her daughter Amanda told her: "Since my only brother was murdered nearly two years ago nothing has been the same.

“His presence is missed every single day. To say that I miss him is an understatement. I never knew my heart could ache so much.

“I didn't even get the chance to say goodbye."

Eugene's father Mack Attram told her: "Eugene's murder has dug a huge hole of emptiness in my life.

“I have not been able to have a normal working life since his murder.

“I am still consulting my GP and a bereavement counselor."

Muareen said her son's death was like having half of her torn away.

"I couldn't understand how my son could die before me.

“How could I be burying him?

“It didn't make any sense. The moment of shock replayed over and over in my head.

“I cope with the outside world by smiling but inside I was screaming."

Detective Inspector Alison Hepworth said it had been a complex investigation and paid tribute to the family who had remained confident that police would solve the case.

She said: “The death was brutal, with Eugene beaten and stabbed repeatedly during the course of a gang fight.

"Since Eugene died, over 50 young people have been murdered in London.

“Eugene's family are reminded of his killing every time they hear of another brutal death. I pay tribute to the witnesses in this case who were brave enough to come forward and show they want to see the end of this senseless violence."
