The replacement of the temporary Walton Bridge has moved a step closer.

Surrey County Council has published three statutory orders to move the construction process on.

A compulsory purchase order will acquire land from the Oatlands Drive and Bridge Street junction on the Walton side to the junction of Walton Bridge Road and Windmill Green on the Shepperton side.

A side roads order is needed to make road alterations possible as it will allow the council to build new roads, close roads off and replace premises access.

The final order is a bridge scheme that authorises the construction of a new permanent bridge.

This order is not for the design of the bridge, just the permission to build over the river.

The Secretary of State for Transport will have to confirm these before government funding for the estimated cost of £28m to £31m, can be secured.

David Munro, the council’s executive member for transport, said: “We are moving ever closer to our goal of a new Walton Bridge, which will make such a big difference to anyone travelling in this part of the county.

“Inevitably, with such a major project, there are procedures we have to follow, and at each stage opportunities are given to local residents to have their say.

“If all goes according to plan we should start construction in 2010.”
