Cousldon Academy is to hold an open day to celebrate the grand unveiling of the new Oasis Community centre for learning.

Reverend Steve Chalke, founder and chief executive officer of Oasis Community Learning will be unveiling a commemorative plaque and leading an assembly to mark the opening of the academy tomorrow.

As well as unveiling the new and improved school, students will be treated to a slice of a massive cake, specially made to feed the 560 students on their first day of school.

Principal John Murphy said: “We are all looking forward to showing our guests around the academy and having the opportunity to celebrate our new beginning.

“It’s been a huge task ensuring that the academy was ready for September 1 and I am confident that this celebration will be the first of many academy successes.”

After the opening ceremony, 18 of the college’s staff will be jetting off to Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain, for a charity ascent.

The eager staff, led by Mr Murphy, will scale the mountain in an effort to raise funds for some of the school’s underprivileged students.

This will enable the students to participate fully in school life and take part “enrichment opportunities” such as the ski trip to the USA, planned for Easter 2009.
