Merton environmentalists greeted an army of climate change activists who rolled through south west London on Monday evening for a climate change debate.

Stopping off in Putney, members of the Climate Caravan were taking part in a month-long, 60-mile procession from Heathrow airport to Kingsnorth power station in Kent.

The Climate Caravan began its trek on Sunday, walking or cycling from the embattled airport and is due to finish on August 3 at Kingsnorth, the UK’s first new coal-fired power station for 30 years.

The 100-strong audience heard speakers including Andrew Simms (New Economics Foundation), Andy Goldring (Permaculture Association), Leila Deen (World Development Movement) and Shahrar Ali Green Party). But star of the evening was Penny Eastwood of the Climate Caravan whose passionate speech set the tone for the rest of the debate.

She said: "The weight of history and the ghosts of the past are watching us here. I feel we are creating history."
