A Shepperton tourist has tearfully told of how she dined with honeymooners Ben and Catherine Mullany the night before they were shot in Antigua.

The newly-married couple were staying at the same resort as Beverley Stairs before being shot in what is believed to have been a botched robbery.

Mrs Stairs told police she believes she was one of the last people to see the couple before the shooting in which Mrs Mullany, a 31-year-old doctor from Wales, was killed.

Her widower, also 31, is fighting for his life in hospital – and is thought to be unaware his wife is dead.

Doctors fear he may have been left brain after the attack and has little chance of recovery.

The pair had set-off on their two-week honeymoon after getting married at a church in the Swansea valley on July 12.

Mrs Stairs, a mum-of-two, told police she heard a gunshot at the time Mrs Mullany was killed.

She explained the pair had been making plans for their future before the shooting and were looking forward to getting home to start their new life together. She had dined with the pair in the holiday resort’s restaurant the night before the attack.

The 41-year-old, who flew back into Gatwick yesterday, described how she had visited Mr Mullany in hospital.

“It was the first time we’d seen him without Catherine, they were inseparable.

“They were wonderful. It was a pleasure to have met them.”
